Party Invite

1. Tip 1: Start With Planning The Card Dimensions

Your invitation card dimensions are usually going to be based on the type of party you are throwing and the theme. The dimensions simply give you an idea of the shape of the card which will determine how you should approach the design of the card, how you can mail it, and the type of envelopes you’ll need. Below are the dimensions we encourage you to consider.

  • 3.5 x 5 inches (RSVP card)
  • 5.25 x 5.25 inches (square invitation)
  • 4.25 x 5.5 inches (response card)
  • 4.5 x 6.25 inches (response card)
  • 5 x 7 inches (standard invitation)
  • 5.5 x 7.5 inches (large invitation)
  • 6.5 x 8.75 inches (large invitation)
  • 4 x 9.25 inches (thin invitation)

2. Tip 2: Don’t Rush The Process, Start Early

Don’t wait last minute to begin designing your event invitations. They will often be the first impression of your party and what guests can expect to experience there. Give yourself time to plan out the concepts, typography, design and whatever else you need to meet your ideals.

3. Tip 3: Consider Starting With a Premade Template

Premade templates from graphic design services like Canva can be extremely useful in not only saving you time but also in helping you draw inspiration for the type of direction you want to take with the design of your invitations. These can be fully customized but give you a good foundation to start with as they are professionally designed and often free or very affordable.

4. Tip 4: Determine The Visual Style You Want To Go For

When it comes to visual style, the first thing you want to consider is color theory. Color theory is a body of practical guidance to color mixing and the visual effects of a specific color combination. Understanding this will really make your invitations pop. From here, you want to create a color scheme which will have an effect on how your invitations are perceived. You may want to consider using templates for this as well. As you experiment you will eventually find a visual style that works for you. One way to expedite this process is by creating a mood board where you put typography, images, colors, etc. that help you narrow down a unique style.

Color Choices

5. Tip 5: Be Mindful Of The Font You Choose

When it comes to the font and typography of your card it’s always better to be unique and express what you’re going for versus going with a generic font. One of the best ways to find lots of high quality, unique and free fonts is through Google Fonts. Once you’ve found a few fonts that work, stick with those. Don’t try to use too many fonts as that dilutes the design.

6. Tip 6: Ensure The Text Is Well Spaced and Centered On The Card

Trying to squeeze lots of text onto a card will overwhelm those who receive your invitations. It is important to allow there to be empty space both around images and between text. Don’t try to squeeze text together or make it too small and take advantage of ampersands to reduce space. Stick with what’s proven to work in design which is good spacing and putting the text in the center of the card, regardless of the font or typography.

7. Tip 7: Make Sure Your Text Is Legible and The Design Is Consistent

When it comes to choosing the font and typography, it can be easy to get carried away and try things that may be hard to read or understand. You want to avoid using typography that’s too complex or hard to read, the same goes for font size, make sure it’s not too small. Having consistency in your design is crucial for it being impactful, especially if you have multiple invitations as is often done for weddings. Consistency is key.

8. Tip 8: Use Photography

You are not only limited to text and graphic designs, adding a personal or theme focused photograph is a great way to make the invitation more personal and intimate for those you invite. For example, if you use a photo of you and your partner for a wedding invite, that’s way more intimate than sending a card with just a logo or visual design on it. Choose photos wisely.

9. Tip 9: Consider Adding Texture To Your Card

If you really want to make your invitation pop and have a unique feel (literally), adding texture to your card may be a great choice. When it comes to textures, there are 3 popular options of textures you can use; debossed which is depressed into the paper surface, embossed which is raised up on the paper surface, and letterpress printing which leaves an imprint of text or images, either with or without ink on the paper. Adding one or all of these textures can truly make your party invitation stand out and be memorable.

10. Tip 10: Wrap It Up

As a final part of your design process, consider adding a personal touch such as your unique signature being on the bottom of the invitations. Now you’ve finally finished designing your party invitation and it’s time to send them out. But not so fast, you’ll need to package them into envelopes first. Consider decorating your envelopes with ribbons, designs, stickers or images. The envelope will be the first element of your invite design that people will see! Be sure to also use high-quality paper for printing the invitations and for the envelopes. Most cards are printed on smooth cardstock but there are many options to choose from.

If you’ve followed each of these 10 steps, you should now have an epic party invite that reflects the style, theme, and vibe you are going for when it comes to your party. You’ll be sure to turn heads and all the extra attention to detail will truly pay off.
